Emmerich says 2012 sequel/TV series 2013: Will be like Lost and District 9

2012-TV-Series-2013

Roland Emmerich claims that he makes disaster movies because he hates sequels. Well the director sang the same tune to i09 at the 2012 press day, only to seconds later spill some major details about his new ABC TV series 2013, which will pick up after the events of the upcoming 2012 flick.

It's all **SPOILERS** from here on out... you've been warned. Not to be confused with the 2012 tagline, "We were warned."

The end of 2012 finds the surviving cast members--who have managed to stay alive amidst the massive floods and volcanic destruction on Earth-- setting out to the new center of the world, Africa.

Emmerich and his 2012 co-writer Harold Kloser had apparently worked out what happens next, and ABC has picked it up as a television series that Emmerich will help with. The series sounds promising. He "wants" it to have a feel more akin to that of Lost or District 9 rather than the 2012 movie itself. That's an extremely BOLD statement. I'm taking that as; more believable character development, instead of throwing every special effect in our face like it was candy. I doubt it means the series will feature aliens or smoke monsters. And unless a smart team(not Emmerich) is brought on to develop it, it won't come close to what Lost or District 9 has achieved with audiences.

Check out what  Emmerich has to say about his post-post-apocalypse series, and let us know what you think!

io9's Meredith Woerner: You may dislike sequels but I hear you are interested in making a TV series sequel to the this film called 2013?

But that's something different. It's something like Lost, which has a totally different feel to it. It's more than a little bit like District 9. These ships show up in Africa and [in] Cape Town there are survivors, and they are not happy people. Because they were left behind. And how do you start a new society? It has no visual effects, it's all about characters. What will the future bring? Hope for us?

Will 2013 have to happen pretty quickly after this movie is released? Do you have any actors or additional writers in mind?

They just made a deal with ABC. And we're very happy about that. I'm already discussing with the people that write and try to help them with what this could be. The original idea is from [2012 co-writer] Harold [Kloser], me and Mark Gordon. Mark is big in TV so Harold and I had an idea. Because there were a lot of things we couldn't incorporate in 2012. And we thought it was interesting what happened after all this. When we were writing the script we had to end it at one point and we left it very vague. They discovered that Africa is still existing. It has just risen a couple thousand feet. But that's it. And we ended on a really really small note about a little girl who overcame her fear. It was a very small way [to end]. Which was also kind of for us something very personal and poignant. [In the sequel] people would expect visual effects but it will be only what happened between people. We can do that on a TV show week after week after week.

It's just the fact that they come off their shiny arcs to a destroyed Cape Town. And it's not the bright and happy future everybody was envisioning. It's same old problems.
