Quentin Tarantino revealed in a recent interview with MTV that Warner Bros. actually offered him the opportunity to direct the Green Lantern film! I think Tarantino could make a great comic book film! He kind of did with his most recent film Inglourious Basterds. The director was heavily influenced by the Marvel Comic World War II focused series Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. Tarantino said:
I was offered the Green Lantern, Not since it's been a script, but just like, 'Hey we own the 'Green Lantern.' Would you like it?
He obviously turned down the opportunity. The Green Lantern is now in the hands of director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) and stars Ryan Reynolds.
Apparently when Tarantino was working in a video store in his 20's all he wanted to see was comic book films:
So there's a little part of me that's like, 'Wow, if I was in my 20s, this would be the genre I'd want to specialize in, but they weren't making them then, or at least not the right ones. But there also is an aspect where I've kind of outgrown that a little bit.
So as of right now he's not interested in bringing any comic book characters to the big screen, but he is interested in creating his own superheroes and storylines which is just as good if not better.
It wouldn't be an existing comic book character. I'm a writer. I'd want to use my imagination and not have to fight with geeks' memories of how this character should be and, 'Oh, I cast an actor as opposed to a bodybuilder' or it's not as good as the way [DC Comics artist] Neal Adams drew him.' If I were to do something like that, I would want the fun of coming up with the superhero myself.
In a way Tarantino has already created several different superheroes in his films! Look at The Bride in Kill Bill and the Bastereds in Inglourious Basterds. All he has to do is keep making awesome movies, and if one day he decides to create his own classic kind of "superhero" then awesome! I'd love to see it!
So would you have liked to see Tarantino direct the Green Lantern? Would you like to see him direct a comic book movie, or are you happy with what he is doing?
