I have been waiting for this Abraham Lincoln film project for years to get made! I wondered if it would ever get off the ground and it looks like we are getting closer to it actually happening. Steven Spielberg has always been attached to direct it and Liam Neeson has been on board for some time now to play the 16th President of the United States. I have been fascinated by the history and stories of Abraham Lincoln since I was in grade school. He was one of the greatest leaders this country ever had and the sacrifices he made were incredible. Tony Kushner was brought in to write the script for Spielberg. Reporter Jeff Wells had the opportunity to talk to Kushner about the project and here is what he had to say:

"the decision will be made on Lincoln next week" and that if the green light is given the film will be "out by Christmas."

Ah, just in time for Oscar season. That makes sense. It also means that Spielberg who is directing 'Tintin' at the moment will have to jump right into 'Lincoln' to get it done on time. He will have a busy year. But I hope it gets greenlit, this is one of those films that needs to be made.

Kushner also said that Lincoln "only covers two months of his life," my guy says, and that "the first draft covered four months and [was] 500 pages."

Wow! There is so much that happened in Lincoln's life they could have made the movie a trilogy if they wanted to.

Kushner also said that the 13th amendment -- the abolition of slavery and involuntary servitude -- "is a big thing in the movie."

Well, that was a pretty important part of his presidency. I would assume the the film would be the last two months of Lincoln's life, but he was killed 4 months after the 13th amendment was enacted. So there may be some time leaps in the film, or they change up history a little bit, or Lincoln's death will not be part of the movie. As long as they don't change history I'll be ok with whatever they end up doing.

A few other things that this movie could possibly include that took place during the last 2 months of Lincoln's life include:

  • The Union victory at the Battle of Five Forks on April 1st, which forced Gen. Robert E. Lee to evacuate Petersburg and Richmond, the Confederate capital

  • A subsequent rebel loss at Sayler's Creek

  • Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865, in the village of Appomattox Court House.

This would be one hell of a movie! Other people besides Liam Neeson that have been attached to the project include Sally Field as Lincoln's wife and Harrison Ford has been rumored to play the part of Andrew Johnson. I'm pretty excited for this one.
