Jerry Seinfeld Returning to NBC with The Marriage Ref

by Joey Paur

It has been 11 years since Jerry Seinfeld's classic TV Show went off the air. He created one of the greatest TV sitcoms ever, I still watch it almost every night, it never gets old! Now Seinfeld is coming back as the executive producer and creator of a new TV show called 'The Marriage Rif'. It is a reality TV show, one that may not last too long to be honest with you. It's reality TV that is suppose to bring laughs out of people's marriage problems. Variety reports:

"This is not a therapy show, it's a comedy show," said Seinfeld, who will, guest appearances aside, be involved in his first TV series since "Seinfeld" left the air in 1998. "After nine years of marriage, I have discovered that the comedic potential of this subject is quite rich."

"Jerry called us up and told us he had an idea," Silverman said. "He flew in to sit down with us, and he and Ellen pitched the show. We were laughing the whole time as they went through the concept. As Jerry noted, some of the greatest comedies in history have been about marriage."

"Picture well-known people weighing in on a couple's relationship issues and deciding who is right and who is wrong right on the spot, like a referee," she said.

I am not sure what to think about this one. I hate reality TV and feel that it is taking away from really good imaginative shows. I feel like it was created to dumb down the audience, and use it as a way to advertise crap. I understand from a money making point of view it is a networks dream come true, but I'm not a big fan. On the other hand I am a huge fan of Seinfeld's comedy, and I can see the show being funny... for married couples. With a show like this I really don't see people that are not married getting into it, and single people are a huge TV target market! Even for married people they are already living the married life, why would they want to tune in and watch someone else's real life marriage issues? So they can relate to them? I personally just don't see what the appeal is. But thats just me. I'll be surprised if it gets more than one season.

I thought that if Jerry Seinfeld ever came back to do TV it would be another brilliant comedic sitcom, I guess I was wrong.
