A Movie Based on Bubble Gum? Really? Come on.

It is just weird to me that someone actually wants to make a movie based off of the classic gum, Bazooka Joe. Michael Eisner and his Tornante Co. have brought in a a fresh off the boat screenwriter named Mark Hammer who is actually graduating from Chapman University this weekend. He obviously studied film and I guess you gotta start somewhere so Bazooka Joe it is. He got the job from a spec script he wrote that went around Hollywood but never sold but it got his foot in the door and here he is.

The Bazooka Joe gum has been around since the 1950's and came with a little comic strip wrapped around the gum which was used for advertising. The main character in the gums comic strip was Joe who wears an eye patch. Why does he wear the eye patch? Perhaps the movie will be an origin story and we will find out. With a guy like Joe I would say he was probably messing around with bottle rockets and one of the took out his eye. Or maybe his pissed off The Bride from the 'Kill Bill' movies and she plucked it out of his head. Whatever the reason the comic follows him on his misadventures, joined by his friends and family.

Here is a little break down of the other characters:

Pesty, who may be Joe's younger brother, with a 1950s cowboy sombrero.
Mort, a gangly boy who always wears his red turtleneck sweater pulled up over his mouth
Hungary Herman, Joes Tubby pal.
Jane, Joes Girlfriend
Toughie, a sailor hat-wearing, streetwise type.
Walkie Talkie, a neighborhood mutt.

Is anyone excited for this movie? I wonder if the film will be CGI, animated, motion-capture, or live-action.
