EMH IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS!

by EMH

Sorry my accountability report is so late. We suffered a city-wide power outage during a storm Monday evening and things went crazy for me. Nevertheless, here are my results…

It was a mixture of good, bad, and ugly predictions for me at the box office last weekend. If you switch #1 and #3, I look like a freakin’ genius. However, I must admit my wrongness. While my college writing professors shudder at my last two sentences, you take in the weekend numbers and compare them with my predictions.

My original predictions for the top five were…

1. The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 31.0 million

2. Up 29.1 million

3. The Hangover 26.2 million

4. Imagine That 11.6 million

5. Land of the Lost 9.5 million

Here’s what really happened…

1. The Hangover 32.8 million

2. Up 30.8 million

3. Pelham 1 2 3 23.4 million

4. Night at the Museum 2 9.6 million

5. Land of the Lost 9 million

I WAS WRONG…

This is an accountability report, not a political spin room. I had The Hangover dropping to number 3, but it brought in 6.6 million more than I thought. I have misjudged this movie for the second weekend in a row. It won’t happen again.

I WAS RIGHT…

Up has me looking pretty good. I had it at number 2, and it finished at number 2. I had it at 29.1 million, and it finished at 30.8 million. Less than 2 million off!

I WAS WRONG…

Travolta + Denzel = disappointment. Pelham 1 2 3 really let me down. I thought this movie would actually exceed expectations; sadly, it did not even reach them. I was off by almost a full 8 million.

I WAS RIGHT

I nailed the take for Land of the Lost. I said 9.5 million. It came in at 9 flat. I said it would be good for 5th place. It finished at 5th place.

I WAS WAY, WAY, WAY WRONG

I thought Eddie Murphy would draw something. This is just getting sad. I hate to say it, but he may just have to go back to RAW Eddie Murphy. Perhaps Axel Foley, Reggie Hammond, Billy Ray Valentine Eddie Murphy would please audiences. Imagine That did not crack the top five, and debuted at a pathetic 5.5 million dollars.

HERE ARE THE READERS’ PREDICTIONS…

NOBBY – YOU WERE WRONG…AND RIGHT! Like me, you overestimated Pelham and underestimated Hangover. You were off by 10 million on Up. However, nice picks on Land of the Lost and Imagine That. You are the best at picking the worst of the top five this week.

DR.VENKMAN – WIN SOME, LOSE SOME! Dude, nice pick on Pelham. You must have made a deal with the devil. You nailed it. Sadly, you thought it would be number 1, but still an awesome prediction. Way off on Hangover, Up, and Imagine That. But you finished strong with Lost. Only a million off. Good job.

TO ALL TWITTER FOLLOWERS - @eileen_rita – Nice pick on Imagine That. Not too bad on Pelham. @bigpicture – You are the predictor of the week. You were right on with Hangover and Up, and very close with Pelham. Awesome Job!

LOLA – Girl, you know I love you on the podcast. We need more female opinions. However, your predictions were worse than anyone else that played with us. Please do better next week.

See you in a couple of days for this weekend’s predictions. Will Year One knock off The Hangover? Stay tuned,

EMH
