Classic Video Game ASTEROIDS Heading to the Big Screen

I can't believe the latest video game to get picked up to be adapted into a major motion picture! OK, maybe I can. Universal Pictures has picked up the film rights to the classic Atari video game Asteroids. Matthew Lopez has been brought in to write the script for the film. Here is a guy that came out of Disney's writing program and worked on a few films for them such as Bedtime Stories, Race to Witch Mountain, and he also wrote the most recent draft of The Sorcerer's Apprentice which is currently in production. Producing the film is none other than  Lorenzo di Bonaventura who also produced the Transformers movies.

I'm really not sure where they can take the story for this 1979 game about a triangle in the middle of the screen that destroys asteroids. Oh wait! I think there was an occasional UFO. Because the game has no story the studio will be creating one from scratch, just like they are for a ton of other Hasbro board game properties such as Battleship and Candyland. So Universal pretty much bought the name of the game and are going to use it as a selling tool to sell the film. "Based on the Classic Video Game... Asteroids!" Only it's not really based on anything. The movie will actually end up being more of an original idea than anything else. That's if it doesn't end up being a remake of Armageddon.

So if you were to come up with a story for the film where do you see story going?
