Comic-Con 2009 has been a really special convention. There have been a ton of new and fun things revealed to us and here is one more thing to add to the list.
If you are a fan of Sci-Fi novels then this could be really cool or it could really suck. The Sci-Fi classic trilogy Foundation, by Issac Azimov, is going to be brought to the big screen.
On day three of the Con, while waiting for the Iron Man 2 panel, we sat through the panel for 2012. To everyone's disliking, I enjoyed the footage that they showed. But something else was in that panel that made me smile and that was that 2012's director Roland Emmerich was asked what his next project would be. In response he said that he would like to do Azimov's Foundation. I love this story and it is something that I would like to see brought to film.
Little did I know that within a few hours Emmerich would announce that he has a writer for the film. Talk about surprise after surprise. The writer hired on to take on the task of bringing Azimov's vision to life is Acadamy Award nominated Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan).
Thank you to comingsoon.net for getting this exclusive information. Here is what Emmerich had to say about this project:
"'Foundation' is my first attempt to do a series of movies, because we're developing three movies: 'Foundation,' 'Foundation and Empire' and 'Second Foundation,'" he told us. "It took me a long time to actually wait for the moment where the rights were totally free and we got them all, it's like 11 books, and we own the title 'Foundation' and also some of the robot novels and now we can really do these. I just hired a very good writer, the writer of 'Saving Private Ryan' who wrote 'The Patriot' for me and he's incredible. He is the most knowledgeable person I ever met about the 'Foundation' novels. It's great to write with somebody like that because there's no, 'I'll just look in the book and see what's there'... he knows it. I had a certain idea and he had a certain idea and that together I think will make this a movie."
For all of you who are cussing at your screen right now because Emmerich is the one behind this project, you have to remember one thing. Emmerich directed Stargate, and that was a great Sci-Fi film. So, we know he knows how to do it. It just really depends on how he wants to bring it to us. I am just keeping my hopes up that he will stay true to the material and bring it to us the way Azimov intended.
I am very interested to see how this project pans out, so I will stay on top of this. Until next time, let me know what you think.
