KING KONG Prequel Film Getting Made

Movie King Kong by Joey Paur

So who's ready for another King Kong movie!? After Peter Jackson's version I really don't see a reason for yet another Kong film, at least not now anyway. The movie is actually going to be based on a book called Kong: King of Skull Island, which is a prequel to the events we have all seen in previous movies, so it will not be a remake. The book was released about the same time Jackson's film came out.

The book was written by Joe Devito and Brad Strckland, and focuses on the backstory of Skull Island and how the giant gorilla became king there. It introduces other giant gorillas and dinosaurs which we have also seen in the previous films. The rights to the book were picked up by Spirit Pictures. Variety Reports:

Rights to make the movie were brokered with the Merian C. Cooper family, who own the Kong property. Cooper co-directed the original "Kong," released in 1933.

"We're very concerned with honoring Merian C. Cooper's legacy in Hollywood. We want to make sure that whatever we deliver will honor his memory," said Spirit's Steve Iles, who worked on videogames for the "Star Wars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchises through his Pocket Studios game company.

The plan is to produce the film using motion-capture technology such as Robert Zemeckis used to make "The Polar Express," "Beowulf" and the upcoming "A Christmas Carol." Spirit's own facility would produce the CG work.

Well, I hope this film works out for them. I'm not very excited about it, but maybe if the footage they put together turns out being cool, then who knows. What do you all think about a new King Kong film?
