After all of these year the longest running primetime scripted drama, Gunsmoke, will be making it's way to the big screen. The movie is being developed over at CBS Films where they have brought in National Treasure: Book of Secrets writer Gregory Poirier to bust out a screenplay. Craig Baumgarten is producing the movie and he's been involved with films such as Shattered Glass and Never Back Down.

The story will revolve around several different characters in Dodge City, Kansas during the time of westward expansion, but will focus on Marshal Matt Dillon the leader of Dodge, Galan "Doc" Adams, the towns Physician, and Miss Kitty Russell, owner of the Long Branch Saloon. The story will be much like the original show, but will have a contemporary look and of course modern action styles.

I have only seen a couple episodes of the series, but I love a good western, so if they put together a solid story that brings in the drama, grittiness and outlaws, then we may have ourselves a winner here folks!  If you are a fan of the TV show Gunsmoke what do you think about the film being adapted for the big screen?
