Will we be seeing ARCHIE COMICS characters on the big-screen soon?
America's favorite non-threatening, girl juggling teenager may be getting the big screen treatment. Variety reports Archie Comics Publications has signed with CAA. Much like what the agency has done for Mattel, they will seek to create branded entertainment opportunities in film and TV.
The 70-year-old Archie Comics owns such brands as Archie & Friends, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Super Duck and Dotty and Ditto.
Back in 2001, Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson starred in the poppy-punked up Josie And the Pussycats movie. From 1996 to 2003 Mellisa Joan Hart starred on the syndicated Sabrina The Teenage Witch sitcom.
But there has yet to be a live action treatment for Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and the rest of the folks in Riverdale.
Hard to believe for the American icon that Archie is. Sure the character feels a bit dated, eternally staying 16 years old for the past 68+ years. But aren't his problems still relevant?
Let's compare Archie to a recent movie teenager: Michael Cera's Nick, from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.
Archie and Nick are clumsy, lovable teenagers that are neither jocks nor brains.
Both drive crappy running junk cars.
Both have loyal but one track minded best friends.
And both have two girls that are polar opposites fighting for their affection.
So if they do something with the tone of Infinite Playlist, a live action Archie Movie could be amazing... but they're probably gonna go cheesy with it. Unless they go this route...
It would be hilariously bad!
The Archie Comics pact is just yet another case of Hollywood grabbing at established branded properties, with Disney's acquisition of Marvel Comics and Warner Bros. recent overhaul of DC Comics, with the newly formed DC Entertainment.
