Warner Bros. to Remake Chan-Wook Park’s SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE

Movie Warner Bros. by Joey Paur

Another unnecessary remake is prepping up for production. Warner bros. has acquired the remake rights to the Chan-Wook Park-directed Korean film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. The film is part of Park’s trilogy which also includes Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Oldboy, which was also trying to get remade by Spielberg and Smith, but thankfully it ultimately fell through.

The film is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian, and they have  brought on Brian Tucker to write the script. He recently wrote an upcoming film called Broken City, but he has really done anything else. I hope he's a good writer because this would be hard material to tackle.

I’m a big fan of Park’s trilogy of films, and I don’t see any reason in remaking any of them. I just don’t think American cinema has the stomach to make these kinds of films. Hollywood loves to play it safe, and if any of these films were to be remade they would be very watered down versions that in no way would live up to the original films. Those films are just so jacked up!

This movie is a great story of revenge that I don’t believe we have seen done in America cinema. This is the story of Ryu, a deaf man, and his sister, who requires a kidney transplant. Ryu's boss, Park, has just laid him off, and in order to afford the transplant, Ryu and his girlfriend develop a plan to kidnap Park's daughter. Things go horribly wrong, and the situation spirals rapidly into a cycle of violence and revenge.

If for some reason you have not seen any of these films I highly suggest you get yourself a copy and watch them because they are freakin incredible. Maybe this one will fall through just like Oldboy.
