David O. Russell gave an update to the LA Times about his upcoming video game based action-adventure film Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The good news for fans and Sony is that according to Russell the script is already about halfway done. He goes on to describe the overall direction of the story in the interview.
For those of you not familiar, the video game focuses on Nate Drake (a descendant of Sir Francis Drake) and his quest to find lost treasure on an island far from civilization. Russell confirmed his plans on taking the story in a new direction and including Drake's extended family and putting them into adventure situations all over the globe with the world's most influential people.
"This idea really turns me on that there's a family that's a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities ... [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice."
As we reported, Mark Wahlberg will be taking on the role of Nate Drake for the film. Wahlberg told the LA Times that, while he has not actually read what Russell has written he has discussed the direction of the film and believes it's a world away from most video-game adaptations. "To me what a lot of those other movies lack is the level of character and heart," he said.
Both Flirting With Disaster and the upcoming film The Fighter deal with great characters are part of Russell dysfunctional-families which Russell will use to help influence him on "Drake's."
Russell went on to say:
"We'll have the family dynamic, which we've done in a couple of movies now," he said. "And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That's a really cool idea to me."
I loved the games and am excited to see the direction that this film takes with Wahlberg in the lead under Russell's direction. I am anxious to see if they can officially get Pesci and DeNiro for roles. If they do then this could be one of the best films adapted from a video game.
