20th Century Fox Takes Over THE THREE STOOGES For A March 14 Start Date

Now that MGM has had their bankruptcy, their approved films will finally get made as expected.  However, I was not expecting the first film announced to be The Three Stooges.  This long planned comedy will now change hands from MGM to 20th Century Fox and has scheduled a March 14 start date!

Bobby and Peter Farrelly will be direct the script they wrote with Mike Cerrone. The film will be produced by Connundrum's Bradley Thomas with Charles B. Wessler. Earl Benjamin, the gatekeeper of the Stooges estate, and the stepson of Joe DeRita, will serve as executive producer. DeRita was the sixth member of the troupe, he  played the role that Jerome "Curly" Howard originated.

With both Jim Carrey and Sean Penn out of the film, there is currently no cast.  It is not known if  Benicio Del Toro will still play Moe. The Farrelly's are based at Fox, so this deal puts them on home turf. This film has been in the works for over a decade for Conundrum, first at Columbia Pictures, then Warner Bros, and finally MGM.

The initial cast of Carrey, Penn and Del Toro looked to be on solid ground until Penn took a sabbatical for personal reasons. Everything fell apart when MGM hit the financial rocks last year. These are iconic roles and the Farrelly's have a big task ahead of them.  According to Deadline, Peter Farrelly said that "they will play to their strength: a terrific script which will be made for a reasonable budget. They will begin casting immediately."

The story follows the trio starts with the stooges as newborns when they are dropped on the doorstep of an orphanage.   Richard Jenkins is in talks to play the role of the head nun who is terrorized by the Stooges. The story will then follow them into adulthood and will be in the same vein as the original shorts, with the Stooges using their trademark physical comedy to get the best of the wealthy society matrons that tried to exploit them.

According to Peter Farrelly:

"The script is ready to go, and we are opening up these roles to the world right now. We'll make it with the best possible people. Our feeling is that no star is too big to audition and no matter who it is, we're going to have to see him in the role. This is not The Flinstones. You've got to be Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, and that could be a major movie star or an unknown."

I have been interested in this film since it was first announced with Carrey, Penn and Benicio Del Toro in the roles.  With them gone, I am interested to see who the Farrelly's get to star.   Who do you think would be a good choice for these iconic roles?

No author bio. End of line.
