Gullermo Del Toro Opens New Studio Today!

Guillermo del Toro by

Guillermo del Toro, director Mathew Cullen, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and executive producer Javier Jimenez have joined forces to launch a new studio called Mirada.

This 25,000 square foot studio is located in Marina Del Rey. will be used as a home base and a way for del Toro to embrace a transmedia future. The facility which opens for business today has the ability to handle everything from pre-visualization to animatics, story boarding and visual effects work.

Cullen and Jimenez co-founded the commercial design and production company Motion Theory. Navarro was cinematographer on Pan's Labyrinth, the Hellboy films and The Devil's Backbone. Once a bottling plant this facility has been used for visual effects shooting on such films as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Blade Runner.

Del Toro has been interested in creating this studio since he was in New Zealand planning to direct The Hobbit films. Peter Jackson has a number of facilities that allow him to do just about anything under his own WETA roof.  When del Toro left the project, he stepped up the studio's launch.

Here is what del Toro had to say about Mirada:

"We didn't have the Wellington model in mind when we were talking, but one of the great things about it was how close every facility was to each other. Our intention here is to be nimble and guided by strong, traditionally rooted storytelling principles. We will have all these pieces under one roof,  and built a strong creative community here that will nurture future storytellers. Some of the feature projects I have going in the near future will hopefully go through Mirada, which means 'point of view.' One of the ideas for me was to create a company that could become a home for me to be able to work."

The facility will be the home of At the Mountains of Madness, the HP Lovecraft thriller that has del Toro directing and James Cameron producing. A final decision on the project will be made by Universal execs before they go away for the holidays.

Mirada sounds like a logical decision for del Toro.  All I can say is that I am very excited to see the films that come out of there.  What are your thoughts?
