Frank Miller's RONIN Film Adaptation to Start being Worked on Again

Movie Frank Miller by Joey Paur

Frank Miller's Ronin has been trying to get up on the big screen for about three years now. Back in 2007 before Miller's 300 was developed by Zack Snyder, Stomp the Yard director Sylvain White was attached to direct the project and he's been attached ever since. There's really been no movement on the film other than White talking about how awesome it's going to look.

White explains that he had to let the project go for a bit so he could put all his focus and attention on his next film, The Losers, which is another comic book adaptation that he's working on. Now that The Losers is winding down it sounds like he's getting ready to jump back in on Ronin. In a interview with Coming soon he said,

I'm back here in Los Angeles and as I'm finishing post-production on The Losers, I will be diving back into the development of Ronin. I'm just working along with the studio executives developing the story elements and they're attaching a writer in the spring to do a new pass on it.

So the prospect of Ronin getting a big screen adaptation is still alive and well, everyone just seems to be taking their sweet time with it. He goes on to talk about what it takes to develop a graphic novel like this.

It's a very complex graphic novel and it needs very careful attention. Of course to make a movie of that scale, you need a lot of money to pay it justice, especially with the incredible visuals that Frank Miller has in it, but at the same time, in order to get a lot of money to make the movie, it has to have enough commercial appeal, so I'm trying to balance those two things together to make the movie accessible but still smart and throw with all the great ideas and grand ideas that it has. Conceptually, it's such an amazing property, so I think it's strong appeal in that sense, and even for people, I think visually in the trailer, people will be gravitating towards that kind of subject matter and that kind of character, it's amazing.

He goes on the talk more about how he wants to take his time with this project so that it's done right,

I'm taking my time with it. If I'm able to stay on it and develop it the way I want, I just want it to be done right. I don't want to rush it or anything like that. I want the right writer on it and it to be done carefully. So that is one of the projects I have in development.

It sounds like he's got all the right intentions for adapting Ronin for the big screen, but does he have the talent and skill to execute it? I thought Stomp the Yard sucked, and I'm not impressed from what I've seen from The Losers. Hopefully the full film will be better.

Ronin should end up being a freakin' bad-ass film! Hopefully it gets the film it deserves.

What are your thoughts on Sylvain White adapting Frank Miller's Ronin?
