Portman set to star in Female Stoner Comedy BEST BUDS

Movie Natalie Portman by Eli Reyes

When Natalie Portman so famously declared via gangsta rap, "When I was in Harvard, I smoked weed everyday," we all thought the exaggerated exploits in the SNL Digitial Short were purely that of comedic fiction. But it seems like Portman does have weed on the brain, as she'll be following up her arthurian-stoner comedy, Your Highness, by starring and producing in the road-trip stoner comedy Best Buds.

Best Buds will center on two best female friends who take a road trip to their friend’s wedding in order to save her by bringing her weed. Though not a remake of the Cheech & Chong film of the same name, it will fall along the lines of this generation's stoner buddies Harold and Kumar, and is said to be in the vein of Half-Baked.

Portman and her Handsome Charlie Films prods, are currently searching for a director to helm the independently financed comedy, from a script by actress Jamie Denbo. Denbo has had a recurring role on Reno 911 and maybe got a little inspiration for Best Buds from her 5 episode stint on Showtime's Weeds. She also wrote-produced and starred in the never-picked-up Showtime pilot Ronna & Beverly, directed by Paul Feig (Freaks & Geeks, Arrested Development).

The female-driven Best Buds would be an interesting change from the other male-centric road trip comedies -- The Hangover, and the upcoming Due Date -- and the testosterone filled stoner comedies like Pineapple Express.

Portman's Handsome Charlie is also moving forward with an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which is expected to begin lensing after she finishes filming Thor. Best Buds, which will be co-produced by Vendome Pictures (Tom Hanks’ Larry Crowne, Duncan Jones’ Source Code), would fit well into Portman's schedule as she has no go-to project after Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
