Release Date Roundup: Buried, The Smurfs, 21 Jump Street & Next Three Days

Movie 21 Jump Street by Eli Reyes

Here's a roundup of a couple freshly scheduled release dates, and a couple of pushed back releases for some upcoming films.

Lionsgate has announced a September 24th 2010 release date for Buried, the Ryan Reynolds one-man mystery thriller, which made quite the splash at Sundance a couple of months ago. After the dust settled on a bidding war, Buried was the first major sale at the Festival, with Lionsgate spending $3.2 million for U.S. distribution rights.

The release date pits the Rodrigo Cortés-directed film against an already stacked line-up, with  Zack Snyder’s CGI fantasy film Legends of the Guardians, Oliver Stone’s sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and the Kristen Bell comedy You Again all slated for release that weekend as well.

Synopsis:

After his convoy is attacked by a group of insurgents, Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds), a U.S. citizen working as a contract driver in Iraq, awakens to find himself buried alive inside a coffin. His captors have given him nothing but a lighter and a cell phone, which he must use to find some way of meeting their five-million-dollar ransom demand. Faced with limited oxygen and unlimited panic, Paul finds himself in a tension-filled race against time to escape this claustrophobic deathtrap before it’s too late.

Columbia Pictures’ has pushed the previous July 29th 2011 release date of the CGI/live-action hybrid adaptation of The Smurfs a few days back to August 3rd 2011.

The Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua) directed film aptly but lazily titled Smurfs: The Movie, will be fighting with the fanboys, going against Jon Favreau’s feature adaptation of the comic book Cowboys & Aliens, which is set to come out that day, and Joe Johnston's The First Avenger: Captain America, which will come out the week before.

Katy Perry, was most recently cast as to voice Smurfette, and the rest of the cast includes George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, and Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf, Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, and Neil Patrick Harris has been cast as the live-action lead.

Sony Pictures will be pushing the previously announced August 5th, 2011 release date of the action-comedy remake of 21 Jump Street  to a Winter 2012, TBA slot.

Not a good sign, production might have been pushed back. This also comes as surprise since original star Johhn Depp has expressed interest in reprising his role as undercover officer Tom Hanson for a cameo in the film.

The adaptation of the popular 80's show is being scripted by actor Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall, and has been described as a "full on action film where they are going to be blowing sh*t up, and that it will be an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie."

The big-screen adaptation of 21 Jump Street will mark the first live-action film from Cloudy With A Chance of Meatball directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Lastly, Lionsgate has announced a November 19th 2010 release date for the action thriller The Next Three Days.

The Paul Haggis (Crash) written and directed film go against box-office juggernaut Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I, as well as The Rock’s action film Faster.

The movie is a remake of the 2008 a French film Pour Elle. Russell Crowe stars a teacher whose wife is arrested and convicted of a murder she says she did not commit. He comes up with a desperate plan to break his wrongly imprisoned wife (Elizabeth Banks) out of jail. The film also stars Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Jonathan Tucker, Brian Dennehy, and RZA.
