Warner Bros. Going to Adapt BLEACH Manga

Movie Warner Bros. by Joey Paur

Warner Bros. is currently in the process of securing the rights to yet another manga series, Bleach. They are also in very early development for the classic manga Akira. Bleach was written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, and has been published in weekly installments in Japan since 2001.

The story centers on a 15-year-old boy who has the ability to see ghosts and meets a female Soul Reaper, a member of an order that escorts the souls of the dead. A fight with an evil spirit causes the Reaper to transfer all her power to the boy, leaving her stranded in the human world and the boy taking over her job as a fighter of evil.

This could make for a pretty awesome movie, I love the story and concept behind the series, and it would be nice if the WB actually made a decent film out of the property. Peter Segal is in negotiations to produce the adaptation with Viz Media, the anime publishing house that releases the books in English in the U.S. And Michael Ewing, Segal's partner at Callahan Filmworks, will also produce.

Segal is known for directing comedies such as 50 First Dates and Get Smart. He is not attached to direct the film as of yet. I'm not sure if this is a project he is looking to direct or not. Even just as a producer, it's a little weird that he is producing a movie like this. It just seems out of his range.

What do you all think about the the Bleach film adaptation?
