GREEN LANTERN and SUCKER PUNCH will be Released in 3D

Warner Bros. will be giving two of their upcoming releases the 3D treatment. The studio has already thrown a couple of their other projects on the 3D bandwagon mid or post production, announcing planned 3D releases of the last Harry Potter films, and pushing back the release of Clash of the Titans to convert the entire movie into 3D.

Now Box Office Mojo confirms that Martin Campbell's big-screen adaptation of DC's Green Lantern, and Zack Snyder's girl-powered fantasy-action film Sucker Punch, will both be released in 3D.

Since Sucker Punch has already completed principal photography, it will definitely be converted to 3D in post.

Green Lantern, on the other hand, is scheduled to begin principal photography later this month in New Orleans, but it is unclear whether or not it will be initially filmed with 3D cameras, or converted in post. They were said to have been shooting some tests recently, but I guess it'll all be up to how comfortable Campbell is in using the cameras.

We've all heard James Cameron speak out against 3D conversion, and I whole heartedly agree. It often looks fake, more like layered animation cells rather than the natural roundness and weight of things actually filmed in 3D. If you've seen the Alice In Wonderland trailer in 3D, than you know the effect I'm talking about. But at least the environments and animated characters are designed in 3D, and won't have that odd unnatural look that the live-action elements look to have. For 3D CGI animation converted to 3D, all they basically have to do is render another camera angle, and since the elements are built in a 3D world, it looks natural (i.e Toy Story 1 & 2 rereleases.)

The only upside I see for filmmakers who have their films converted to 3D, is the fact that they don't have to commit to something on the day. With sound, dialogue, special FX, color, and editing done or manipulated in some way after principal photography is finished, they can pick and choose what objects will be deep, or come out, and the degree of which they do so. If they film in 3D, choices have to be made on the spot, and they may not be happy with the end result.

Sucker Punch is scheduled for a March 25th 2011 release. Green Lantern hits theaters June 17th 2011.

What do you think of GREEN LANTER and SUCKER PUNCH being release in 3D?
