Gattaca Director Andrew Niccol's to Develop new Sci-Fi Film I'M MORTAL
The director of Gattaca Andrew Niccol's is currently prepping his next sci-fi film project for New Regency called I'm Mortal. He's not only directing the film, but he wrote it is as well. According to THR the "script is the latest entry into the arena of “social sci-fi,” a genre that uses one big idea to reflect on societal issues." Examples of this new made-up genre include District 9 and Children of Men.
The story is set in the not-too-distant future where the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. The protagonist is a poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as “time keepers.”
Insiders say that the new film project has a little resemblance to Logan's Run and could end up being Niccol’s most commercial work so far. I thought The Truman Show was a pretty commercial movie though. Niccol's is a talented director, and he's made some great films in his career. I'm Mortal is definitely something to look forward too. He's looking to start shooting the film this summer in Los Angeles. Should be cool to see what he's got up his sleeve.
