I recently got a chance to ask the beautiful actress Deneen Melody (and my newest Super-BFF) a few questions that ranged anywhere from if she could kick my ass to how it is being one of films newest Scream Queens. Originally from Texas she packed up and moved to Chicago and hit the film industry wide open and hasn't looked back! Aside from acting she's trained in ballet, an experienced model, and loves her combat training. This makes me feel kind of warm and fuzzy inside and I feel safe incase the zombies do end up attacking! Check out what we talked about!
Brian S- Hey Deneen, besides acting and modeling you do some stunt work and take fighting classes of some kind? Tell us about this?
Deneen- It is true. I do my own fight choreography and most stunt work…so, I take classes in my spare time to train and prepare for it. We often pair up or work in groups during class to come up with fight choreography, which we then record from different angles. It helps us learn what angles show open punches/kicks/etc. and what angles really sell it. Apart from this, we also practice different falls, flips, using certain weapons, and sometimes do wire work.
The only thing that sucks is that I can get busy with projects, so I don’t always get to train as much as I would like, but I make sure I’m there as much as possible. It is a BLAST and I love it!! Fight choreography is a thrill.
“As Night Falls” was a great film for me, as my character has an awesome fight scene with some zombies that involved a samurai sword. I also got to do some cool stuff involving a mine shaft, was thrown into a fence, and handled a shot gun…although a really awesome guy named Frank did most of the stunt driving in the film. I drove the Camaro around for a few shots, but Frank was the one to do the donuts and stuff. He rocks!
Brian S- Can you kick my ass?
Deneen- Yes, yes I can.
Brian S- You're originally from Texas, are you a college football fan? Because you know the Alabama Crimson Tide took care of some National Championship business earlier this year!
Deneen- Admittedly, I’m not much of a sports fan, even though I grew up in Texas. I mean, I DO like Texas A&M, but I don’t really follow them or anything. (My father used to be involved with A&M, so I naturally have some Aggie pride.) No one in my family really played sports when I was growing up…I did ballet, my brothers did Tae Kwon Do, and one brother ran track when he was in High School…but that’s pretty much it.
But, good for Alabama! Yay!
Brian S- You are kind of one of the new "Scream Queens" making an impact, do you like being called a Scream Queen and will you wear this title proudly?
Deneen- Ya know, I get asked this a lot, and I have to say that I don’t mind being labeled as a Scream Queen. To me, it is an honor, as several of the actresses I admire are Scream Queens. They either got their start or are still heavily involved in the horror genre. I think some actresses are hesitant when it comes to this label, but, we should all wear it proudly. It means that we can deal with blood, guts, supernatural creatures, serial killers, and all that fun stuff…plus, Scream Queens are kicking more and more ass now a days. Besides, I don’t think being a Scream Queen means that is all you can do…most of the ladies I know in the horror community are extremely talented and have a range that spreads into all types of movie genres.
Brian S- Speaking of screaming, so can you? That's part of the package deal right?
Deneen- Oh yes, I can scream…very loudly, in fact. Or, at least I think I can. I’ll get to do some intense screaming and crying in the film, “LEWIS” (directed by Anthony Sumner and produced by Marv Blauvelt)…so you’ll need to be sure to watch that one. Mwhahaha!
Brian S- Tell me about Comic Book Divas, your character and what's going on with it? Where and when?
Deneen- Comic Book Divas was created by the wonderful Jeff Hughes and works closely with Jason Dube, the owner of Scattered Comic Studios, to create comic books featuring several talented actresses and models. You can read all about and get tons of information on CBD at their website: http://comicbookdivas.com
I am involved with two different comics at this time. The first one is a vampire comic called “FANGS” written by Jeff Hughes and published/illustrated by Josh Barker of Scattered Comic Studios. It features some very lovely ladies including KK Ryder, Michelle Shields, and Devanny Pinn as Lilly Le Sang, the vampire leader. My character is named Raven, a gunslinger inspired character that is the second in command/body guard of Lilly Le Sang. “FANGS” will not be released till 2011, but fans will be able to purchase a limited edition “FANGS” mini comic at the SAC Horror convention September 25th-26th.
The other comic is a web comic by Jeff Hughes and the absolutely talented Dennis Willman called “A LIFE BEHIND THE MASK”. I’m such a huge fan of Dennis and have admired his work for quite awhile, so I am honored to be involved in this project. The comic basically parodies different comic book heroes/villains and takes a look at the every day life of these Super Women…which proves to be rather comedic. My character, THE BLACKBIRD, is the Batman parody of the “A LIFE BEHIND THE MASK” universe. (Batman is my favorite comic book character, btw, so you can imagine I am thrilled with this!) BlackBird is extremely intense, intimidating, and the ultimate crime fighter, but she may take things a little TOO serious at times…
Brian S- So, if I need a Superhero you'll be there for me?
Deneen- You betcha! The BlackBird is always there to protect.
Brian S- You have a few movies coming out this year, a few we have been following here at GeekTyrant. What can you tell us about these?
Deneen- Thank you, btw, for featuring some of these on the site! I know myself and everyone else really appreciates it. You rock! Anyway, some of the films I have coming out this year include:
AS NIGHT FALLS - This is an action/horror/comedy by Joe Davison that features an outstanding cast: Dwight Cenac, Joe Davison, Debbie Rochon, Michael Ellison, Raine Brown, Andre Reissig, Jeremy King, Julie Anne, Tyler Cross, and two talented young ladies, Lily Cardone and Grace Chapman. This comes from the official site: “10 year old Amelia's (Grace Chapman) parents think it's time for her to go to sleep permanently, leaving her broken body in a silent shallow grave. 50 years later, Mommy and Daddy (Debbie Rochon & Michael Ellison) are back from hell, intent on wreaking the same deadly discipline on anyone not in bed by nightfall. Sisters Holly (Lily Cardone) and Elizabeth (Deneen Melody) are losing their minds, and their friends are losing their heads. Something evil has crashed the party, but no-one knows what they are fighting. When the girl's brother, Charlie (Joe Davison), arrives, he completes the family group and the kids start to find out what firm parenting really means. “
I absolutely loved working on this film. As I mentioned earlier, my character does a lot of cool stuff and really kicks ass, and both Dwight Cenac and Joe Davison have some awesome scenes as well. (Dwight and Debbie fighting outside a moving van? Oh yes. It happens.) This movie has everything: A creepy little ghost girl, crazy murderous demon parents, zombies, guns, samurai swords, a hot Camaro, a kick ass van, a mine shaft, and a bunch of other things you’ll need to see for yourself. http://asnightfallsthemovie.com
SLICES OF LIFE – “Slices” is a feature length horror anthology directed by Anthony Sumner and written by Anthony Sumner, Eric Richter, and the talented Alan Rowe Kelly. It includes three different stories (W.O.R.M – Work Life, AMBER ALERT – Home Life, PINK SNAPPER – Sex Life) and a wrap around (SKETCHER) that brings them altogether. I play the lead in the Sex Life segment along with Galen Schloming and Judith Lesser. It is an awesomely gruesome film about a brother and sister that escape a sexually abusive home, only to find shelter in a beautiful Victorian mansion that hides something much, much worse. This is one of my favorite films, and I am extremely excited for it to start making the festival rounds. I think it is going to shock…and probably gross out…a lot of people, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. Haha. http://slicesoflifemovie.com
PSYCHO STREET – This is another feature length horror anthology created by Raine Brown and Marv Blauvelt. Not only do they both act in the film, but they have written, directed, and produced the majority of it. The segment I am involved in, “LEWIS”, is the final chapter of the anthology and, like “PINK SNAPPER”, is definitely going to be a shocker. I don’t want to give away the story just yet, but I will tell you that it is an occult film, sexually charged, and should be very awesome. Directed by Anthony Sumner and written by Trevor Wright, Marv Blauvelt, and Anthony Sumner, “LEWIS” also stars some very talented actors like Jerry Murdock, Susan Adriensen, and Marv Blauvelt. http://psychostreet.com
MASTER’S DEVILS – Based on a short story by Scott “Spider” Guffey of Legion Studios, “MASTER’S DEVILS” is a fun indie film about 5 devil gals that basically put a bar full of greedy, nasty, pig-headed men in their place. It was produced by Ryan Mojica and Michelle Kruse, written by Master Legion, and directed by Terence Muncy. Of the 5 ladies, my character, Devlynn Envy, is the wild ass-kicker…and I got to do some cool fight choreography against some cowboy truckers. Yeehaw! The other devils include Kristin Montgomery, Kaylee Williams, Sofiya Smirnova, and Lyxi Brinkman…plus, we have a special appearance by First Jason himself, Ari Lehman! It looks like the film will be available this summer, so be sure to check out the website for updates. http://mastersdevilsthemovie.com
WESTERN X – This isn’t a film, but a highly anticipated web series by Michael Flores of Cazador Productions that should be available sometime this year. The series works closely with the talent of the Arizona Roughriders and also stars Dustin Hale, Richard Anderson, Jayson James, Kaily Alissano, Anthony Tempesta, Aaron Ginn-Forsberg, Angelique Deuitch, Kerry Keepers, Ross Nelson, Ed Vanderlee, Josh Pilsbury, George Velasquez, Cisco Saavedra, Damian Hajjar, Bart Overbey, Ed Gary and Jordan Rio. Plus, we have the amazing Vernon G. Wells (of Mad Max 2 and Commando fame) in the cast as well. Without giving too much away, I play the character of Hecate-Freya who serves as a guide to the character of X (Dustin Hale). http://westernxtheshow.com
Brian S- What would be your dream role?
Deneen- Actually, there is a comic book character I am dying to play. I’m always hesitant on talking about it though, because I wouldn’t be very happy if I jinxed it and Hollywood would randomly decide to make this film (even though it isn’t a very well known comic)…but I will say that it is a character that is not only bad ass, but highly complex. I love roles that are like that. Something strong, but also requires a wide range of emotion levels.
I would also love to play a character in some type of fantasy or science fiction epic like “LORD OF THE RINGS”, because those are my favorite types of film (Yes! As much as I adore horror, I’m a geek that loves her fantasy movies) and I grew up pretending to be in Labyrinth or Willow.
Oh, and I would play any role in a Quentin Tarantino film. Just getting to work with him is a dream!
Brian S- Will you be making any more appearances at any Conventions this year?
Deneen- I will be a guest at the Sacramento Horror/Sci-Fi Show September 25-26th at the Scottish Rite Center in Sacramento. I’m being sponsored by the wonderful people of Legends of Heroes and Villains (http://www.legendsalternateuniverse.com) along with the lovely Fangoria Spooksmodel Shannon Lark and Horror Hostess “Miss Misery” aka Reyna Young. Other guests will include: Jewel Staite (Firefly), Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Ed Gale (Child’s Play), Josh Barker (Comic Book Divas), and fellow Scream Queens Tara Cardinal and Devanny Pinn. The lovely Tara and Devanny are also taking part in the “Costumes for Kids” costume drive that will be held at the convention.
The projects I will be promoting at this convention include the films “AS NIGHT FALLS”, “SLICES OF LIFE”, “PSYCHO STREET”, as well as the supernatural web series “WESTERN X” by Cazador Productions and the upcoming comics, “FANGS” and “A LIFE BEHIND THE MASK” by Comic Book Divas.
Be sure to stop by and say hello if you are in the area! It’s going to be a fun party!
Brian S- What's next up for you?
Deneen- Well, I am part of the upcoming “DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT!” remake by Alan Rowe Kelly and Anthony Sumner, so we’re all getting prepared for that one. Alan and Anthony are wonderful…and they are both going to do this film some serious justice. We have an absolutely fantastic cast that includes Zoe Daelman Chlanda, Jerry Murdock, Alan Rowe Kelly, Jeff Dylan Graham, Raine Brown, Terry West, Marv Blauvelt, and horror favorites Debbie Rochon and Caroline Williams.
Another project I have in the works is “THE DEAD LIGHT DISTRICT” by filmmaker K.M. Jamison. The script is amazing and, if you have seen anything from K.M.’s “SERIAL: AMORAL UPRISING”, you know that he knows his stuff. I play the character of Josie in this one, who has a little bit of sass, so it’s going to be fun! http://deadlightmovie.com
I am also currently getting ready to film scenes for a comedic web series I am involved in. This is something very different than what people are used to seeing me in, so it’ll be interesting to see how it is received. It is like “Sex in the City” in that it deals with two young women, best friends that are very different, and the humor involving their sex lives. The script is hilarious!!! We have a great Chicago cast, as well.
Aside from these projects, I am in talks with several directors for some projects coming up this fall and 2011. One film I am attached to is “DIABOLICAL” by Michael Alan Smith, playing the strong spirited Avalon “Ava” Williams. We’re crossing our fingers in hopes that the film will be made soon, but we will be filming a short film this summer that includes several of the “DIABOLICAL” cast, including the lovely Michelle Shields.
Brian S- Being so young where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Deneen- I hope to still be acting, of course! I love it so much, and I really cannot see myself doing anything else. (Unless I could be a Zombie Slayer. I mean, you never know, the zombie apocalypse could happen in the next ten years…)
Brian S- Ok, what would you like to tell all of the horror movie and comic book fans out there?
Deneen- I LOVE YOU GUYS!!! I really really do. The support and encouragement that comes from all of you is greatly appreciated…and I wish I could give you all a great big hug! Thank you for everything.
Brian S- Who's your favorite geek? = )
Deneen- Aw, why, you are…of course! Thank you so much for the interview!
