Stan Lee Says an African-American Spider-Man would be "Confusing"
Oh Stan Lee, why would you say such things? As you know Donald Glover from Derrick Comedy and Community has a strong internet campaign to help get him an audition for the role of Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man reboot being directed by Marc Webb. I think it's a great idea, and I know that many of you do as well. I've seen some pretty crazy comments from people though who don't support it. Now Stan Lee has given his official opinion on the matter.
Lee said that he's thinks Glover should have a chance to audition for the role, and noted that the white characters Kingpin and Nick Fury have been played by African-American actors in film. But he added that might not work in the case of Spider-Man. He went on to say,
Everybody seems to be familiar with Spider-Man, so I say that it isn't that it's a racial issue - it's just that it might be confusing to people. But that's a matter for the people at Marvel to take into consideration. I certainly don't want to weigh in on it in any way, except to say I think Glover is a fine actor.
I don't see what would be so confusing about it? We've discussed this before and the story of Spider-Man could easily be told with a black actor playing the role, and it wouldn't affect anything in the story. But it will definitely effect people's opinions.
