Comic-Con 2010: GREEN LANTERN Panel and Footage Description

One of my most anticipated Panels this year at Comic-Con was for Green Lantern, and it was pretty freakin’ awesome!

Geoff Johns comes out to talk about the new Green Lantern film telling us how excited he is for the film, and they got right into it by showing us the first footage ever from the film!

Here's the Footage Description:

The footage they showed was an unfinished cut, but it looked absolutely amazing! It started out with with a green glowing orb and a voice over of Mark Strong as Sinestro telling the viewer to concentrate on the light in front of them.

"Welcome inhabitants of sector 2814. The Guardians have chosen you as candidates for enlistment but before you can be recruited, you must be tested. The light you see before you is controlled by your will. Focus on the light. If you will it, it will be. Now, focus."

The footage then cuts to a quick series of shots from the film, that gave us a look at Hal Jordan holding the ring, Blake Lively as Carol Harris looking beautiful, and a first look at Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond. We also saw a fast clip of Tomar-Re. The series of shot went really fast and there wasn’t really anything that interesting until the end when Hal Jordan is being attacked by a gang of thugs. Hal gets knocked down and the ring is activated. It’s at this point he fights back and The Ring unleashes the power on the thugs and there is a wide shot of a big green swoosh as Hal fights back using the ring. He creates a big energy fist to take them out. The tugs are thrown around and through a brick wall. The footage ends with an epic shot of the Green Lantern Corp planet Oa.

As this footage is going on we hear a voice over of Ryan Reynold reciting the Green Lantern oath.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see any footage of for Reynold in the Green Lantern costume because the design is actually still a work in process, and What we saw in Entertainment Weekly was not the final product.

It was also revealed all of the lines on the suit go right along with the muscles of the body. It seems like all of everyones favorite characters from the comic are going to be thrown into this movie.

The movie looks absolutely pretty awesome though, so I'm excited to how this movie turns out.

The panel Continues:

Ryan Reynolds says he was influenced by Han Solo and Chuck Yaeger for the part of Hal Jordan. The rest of the cast also talked about their characters and what it was like doing a superhero movie.

Director Martin Campbell is talking about the tone about keeping it very real and that the humor is apparent due to the presence of Ryan and Blake.

Geoff Johns is talks about the origins of the project and how at one point the studio wanted to make The Green Lantern without the ring! Good grief how do these studio executives become studio executives!? Thats insane, what would have been the point without the ring! Thank goodness that didn’t happen.

Sarsgaard described Hammond as "the kid who licked the battery or went up the rooftop with a coat hanger" to see what happened.

A question from the audience asks how they picked the characters to use for the movie, and it focuses on Kilowog, Sinestro and Tomar Re.  They mention that Green Man and Bzzt will both be seen briefly.

Geoff was asked about other DC projects and he said that he can't talk about them. Same as always.

Reynolds talks about how he got to play the Green Lantern, and how they showed him the worlds. He admitted that he was trying to play hard to get, but they really wanted him, though they made him work for the part by doing a couple screen tests before he got the role.

Martin Campbell talks about Hal's relationship with his father Martin as seen in the Secret Origins arc and how that's going to play a large part in the movie, finally culminating at the end of the movie when Hal becomes a Green Lantern.

Geoff Johns was asked about a Justice League movie but he's sidestepping it, saying that it will depend on the success of Green Lantern.

A little kid asks Reynolds to give Green Lantern's oath... Reynolds does then gives the kid a signed book!

A question from the audience asks if there's room for Alan Scott, and Johns says, "There's always room." Reynolds said that Parallax is in the movie, but it sounded like it was something that he wasn't supposed to say.

Asked about whether Mogo may appear, Johns says, "There's a lot of Green Lanterns in the film."

They were then asked which DC character they might make into a movie next, Johns says "Green Lantern 2."

Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong talked a bit about how their character fly in the movie, and then Martin Campbell is talking about Hal and Carol as test pilots and how that's shown in the movie as the two of them test out some of Ferris Aviation's latest jets.  We definitely will see Carol in the skies flying the jets as well, rather than being only on the floor.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.
