1996 DOCTOR WHO TV Movie Finally Gets US DVD Release!

TV DVD by LiamK

I'd heard rumors of this, but Gallifrey News Base is reporting that it's finally happening!  In 1996 the BBC and Fox attempted to revive the then-cancelled Doctor Who series and simultaneously market it to the UK and US.  Unfortunately while it was fairly well-received in the UK it sort of flopped in the US, and nothing happened with it afterwards.  The resulting movie had, in my opinion, a not-so-great plot centered around New Year's Eve 1999 (which automatically dates it... although to be fair we are talking about a Time Lord), but it was well cast and had a budget never before seen on TV for Doctor WhoPaul McGann made a great Doctor with a TARDIS that looked like something out of a Jules Verne book, and fortunately he continued the role in audio plays while his incarnation of the Doctor appeared regularly in comic strips.  This movie also features the regeneration of Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor (sadly, he kind of went out like a punk) and the return of the Master.  It's been previously available in the UK, but the involvement of Fox and Universal, who was also involved in the production, had complicated the rights to release it in the US.  Until now.  Gallifrey News Base reports that it will be available in North America, Australia, and New Zealand sometime in the next twelve months.  While it's not the greatest entry in the show's canon (and I should warn you about an absurd revelation regarding his Gallifreyan biology that has since--wisely--been ignored completely), McGann was great in the role, and I hope his Doctor gets to make another appearance or two in the revived series before it's too late.

I'll leave you with a couple of shots of his TARDIS control room.
