GOOD OLD GAMES Ceases to Exist ... Or Does It?

Games by Wejo

Seemingly popular retro PC game digital distributor Good Old Games stopped offering downloads at some point during the day on Friday. Those that attempted to visit the site that day (and now) to purchase some of their offerings were greeted with a note from the team explaining they decided together that “GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.”

Here’s a bit more from the note:

“We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.”

The snarky but usually spot-on folks at the neoGAF forums seem to think this is merely a marketing stunt by GOG to promote their site leaving beta. One particular poster who appeared to be wise in GOG behind-the-scenes happenings mentioned the site would eventually re-launch with their own Steam-esque client software. Lots of other clues have popped up that support the marketing stunt theory.

Should GOG.com re-emerge, I highly suggest you all check it out. It’s a great source for classic games that would normally not work under newer versions of Windows. If you already use the service, please leave your thoughts in regards to this possibly marketing tactics in the comments.
