Frances McDormand Lends Her Voice To The Role Of The Villain In MADAGASCAR 3

Frances McDormand will lend her voice for the role of the villain in Madagascar 3 for DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming installment to the franchise.

The film is set to be directed by Eric Darnell (he wrote and co-directed the first two films) based on a script from Noah Baumbach and Mireille Soria with Mark Swift producing. The new story sees the animals reunite to try to find their way home by joining a traveling circus.

As expected, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith have signed on to reprise the roles of animals who escaped a New York zoo and end up on the island off the African coast. A bunch of new characters will be added into the group, including an Italian sea lion, a Russian tiger and a Latina jaguar. That is what is reported currently, so it may change once animation gets underway.

McDormand's character is a calculating and goal-oriented animal control officer who leads her team to capture the animals. This will mark the first time that McDormand will lend her voice to an animated feature.

DreamWorks Animation has made a lot of money from the franchise. The original grossed $532.6 million worldwide while the second film made $603.9 million. The popularity of the franchise continues to grow on the small screen through the TV spin-off titled The Penguins of Madagascar.

I only watched the first film and found it mildly entertaining. I don't think it is DWA's finest work. Madagascar 3 is scheduled for release on May 18, 2012.
