Dear Ray Bradbury, Revel In The Irony To Prevent 'Your' Future
Dear Mr. Bradbury,
I know you probably won't read this on a computer given your views on the internet and the hopeless distraction it brings to our culture today, so I hope this letter reaches you in some form or another. In your experienced age I cannot begin to fathom the right words to change the opinion a man whose vision of over 58 years ago is now ringing true in our society today, so I won't bother.
I imagine there was anger in your no doubt forced decision to bring your masterpiece Fahrenheit 451 to the very enemy your book tries to warn society about, the e-book. While I am infuriated at the politics and overall disregard of publishers to respect one of the most influential sci-fi writers of our time, I shudder to think what our world would be without your works to carry us on into the future.
With the amount of distraction, anonymity, and apathy it has allowed in our lives, the internet has proved it can be the most destructive (albeit helpful) socially acceptable tool in modern society today. We use it religiously, as do our children.
Such issues as abduction, financial fraud, and bullying have now left the outside world and entered into the sanctity of our homes. Whether we are the victims or the antagonists, we should all feel guilty.
It is in this regard that I feel this brave new society needs your work now more than ever.
As Granger might suggest, the internet is our "factory of mirrors". We develop it's content. We comment, click, debate, flame, lust, hack, plot, deceive, protest, propagate and support it all; the good and bad, with little accountability. While we may not be able to account for all of these sins, we are all guilty for some.
The internet is our factory of mirrors, and it's high time we should forced to sit back and take a good long look at ourselves. In doing so we may together be able to prevent your bleak, thoughtless future.
Take solace in the fact your work brought me to this conclusion, and hope that future generations will receive your message.
