THE SANDMAN TV Adaptation is Moving Forward
Depending on how you look at it, this next bit of news could be awesome or disappointing. We recently reported that Neil Gaiman's comic book The Sandman was no longer getting the small screen live-action adaptation. Erik Kripke, who was in charge of the show, recently said that “unfortunately, for a lot of varying reasons, Sandman is not in the works, at least for this season. I retain hope that maybe sometime in the future we can resurrect it.” A lot of people rejoyced at this news. I honestly didn't have faith in the guy that created the CW series, Supernatural, to make a great adaptation.
Well, apparently it's not dead. The Sandman is alive and well currently being developed by Chief Creative Officer at DC Entertainment Geoff Johns and Neil Gaiman himself! Johns Twitted the following today,
Correction to world: The Sandman is AWAKE! :) Psyched to be working with @neilhimself on developing one of the greatest series ever!
Johns sent out a follow-up tweet saying,
Sandman in any form – comics to live action – doesn’t work without [Neil]
As long as Gaiman has a heavy hand in developing a live-action TV series adaptation, I have no problems with it happening. I assume that Kripke is no longer a part of it which is fine by me. Gaiman is the driving force being this story, and without his involvment it would fail.
Sandman launched DC Comic's Vertigo imprint, which ran for 75 issues beginning in 1989. Gaiman's worlds-within-worlds weaved an episodic antholgy, focusing on Morpheus, the Lord of the Dreaming, a deity who personifies dreams. The book began in the horror realm but quickly made its mark in fantasy and mythology as Gaiman introduced the Endless, a group of powerful brothers and sisters named Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).
