DVD Review: LET ME IN

I’m so hesitant to watch any remake these days because most are just horrible, not so much the case with Matt Reeve’s Let Me In which is a reimagining to the 2008 movie Let The Right One In, directed by Tomas Alfredson. Reeves (Cloverfield) took the original concept and made it his own by writing the screenplay and directing it.

The story follows Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who is a loner kid and bullied by some kids from school. He meets Abby (Chloe Moretz) who becomes his only friend but hides a secret. She needs human blood to survive and pretty much kills people in this process. As the story unfolds and their bond grows stronger, Abby becomes a hidden guardian to Owen and ultimately Owen becomes one to Abby. I also have to give an honorable mention to Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins who plays a father figure to Abby, which we find out a little surprise later about his character's relationship with Abby..

Let Me In was shot beautifully by Reeves. You can tell he knew what he wanted to do with this project and it shows. The haunting elements in the film are dark and creepy at times as Reeves stays true to the original film but adds just enough new element to make it his own dark fairytale.

The score fits perfectly with the film, scene by scene. Moretz fits the character of Abby, I can’t see anyone else in this role! The same applies to McPhee who makes you feel sorry for his character Owen who goes through unforgiving bullying and scaring. The film has a total run time of 115 minutes that simply flies by.
