The short list of actors has been announced for the Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures upcoming live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s graphic novel Akira. Production has begun gaining traction, an August start date is planned. Steve Kloves has finished rewriting the script and has now delivered it to director Albert Hughes. The story takes place in "the rebuilt New Manhattan where a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment."
The two major roles are for Tetsuo and Kaneda. Deadline reports that Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy are being considered for the role of Tetsuo.
The script has also been given to Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Kaneda.
The film is being produced by Andrew Lazar and Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Akira is one Warner Bros. high priority projects and the plan is to make 2 films to cover all 6 of the books in the series.
