Guillermo del Toro Official Signed on to Direct PACIFIC RIM

Earlier this week it was reported that Legendary Pictures wanted to bring on Guillermo del Toro to direct a new sci-fi monster film called Pacific Rim. Today the production company has confirmed that Del Toro is officially signed on to direct the monster movie, and that they will start shooting in September 2011.

As you know Del Toro has been trying hard to get his hard-R horror film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness off the ground, but apparently the studio and the director weren't able to come to an agreement on how the film should be made. When the film started to fall apart Del Toro decided to jump on board another project, one that's actually going to get made. He's been quietly involved with this Pacific Rim project since Legendary picked up the Travis Beacham-scripted project in June.

Pacific Rim will be a PG-13 film that's set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.

Legendary is looking to release the film in the summer 2013. Del Toro will produce with Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Here's what Del Toro had to say in a statement:

We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons. We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me.

I'm sad that his Mountains of Madness has been pushed aside, but this new project sound promising, what do you all think?
