Michael Mann and Paul Haggis go Looking for GOLD

Director Michael Mann (Collateral, Last of the Mohicans) and writer/director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale) are teaming up to develop a thriller called Gold which is was compared to the film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, set around a ruthless hunt for Gold by prospectors and speculators.

The script was written on spec as a feature writing sample by Patrick Massett and John Zinman, who worked on the TV show Friday Night Lights. Haggis was interested in directing it at first, but he moved on to work on some other projects. He ended up taking the script to Mann who ended up acquiring it so that he could direct it himself.

The creative team is currently putting together a film package before they send it out to the studios. As of right now there are no actors attached to the project, but Mann did send a copy of the script to Leonardo DiCaprio. I have to admit, it would be awesome to see Mann and DiCaprio work together on a film. They are both extremely talented, and they could make a great movie together. The two came close once back in 2007 with an untitled period private eye drama set in the Golden Age of Hollywood, but it got buried due to the budget.

Gold is still in the very early process of development, so it will be awhile before it moves forward. Mann has got a another film project he's looking at doing called Agincourt, about the story of Nicholas Hook, a British archer who fought the French alongside Henry V in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, and Batam.

Would you like to see Mann and DiCaprio work together?
