DreamWorks is already Developing a Sequel to REAL STEEL

The Shawn Levy directed boxing robot drama Real Steel which stars Hugh Jackman wont even be released in theaters until October 7th, but DreamWorks and Disney are already moving forward with a sequel. The studio has hired the screenwriter of the first film, John Gatins, to write the sequel.

It's not normal for a studio to start developing another sequel this far in advance. They usually want to wait until they see how much money the first film made. Does the studio really think they have that big of a hit on their hands? I wasn't really that impressed with the trailer. It looks like a fun movie, but it didn't look like sequel material.

The film has had some internal screenings as well as a CinemaCon presentation of footage in Las Vegas. Apparently they've gotten a strong response, but that doesn't mean it's going to make a lot of money. Who knows though, maybe the movie will be extremely awesome and blow everyone away.

In the film Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

What are your thoughts on a sequel to Real Steel going into development so early?
