Disney is close to a deal to finance and distribute Chrome and Paint, which Ice Cube will direct and star in. The film is reportedly a gritty Boyz N' The Hood-style drama based on a script he co-wrote with Eva Vives. Cube will produce the drama about the "custom car culture of South Central Los Angeles" with his Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez.

Cube's last directing gig was the 2010 Oakland Raiders documentary Straight Outta L.A. and before that directed 1998's The Players Club. The film will take audiences into the subculture of "tricked out Mercedes, BMW and Low Rider cars to frame a drama about the temptation to place materialism above all else." Deadline says that the the film has elements of Saturday Night Fever and American Graffiti. Cube recently had a general meeting with Disney. Disney exec Louanne Brickhouse, herself a car enthusiast, took an interest in the project as did production president Sean Bailey. Universal also showed interest in the film but has a similarly-themed project percolating.

The film was originally co-written as an R-rated feature. For Disney to agree to a deal, Cube will deliver a PG-13 rating. Shooting is slated to begin by the end of summer after Vives does some rewrites while Cube stars in 21 Jump Street. He recently wrapped Rampart directed by Oren Moverman, and is also touring through May on his latest album, I Am The West. Vives will work on the script as part of the Disney Writing Fellowship Program, which she was just accepted.

Cube and Alvarez have gained ground on two other projects at New Line. First up is the R-rated Dirty Harry type drama, which Cube and David O Russell are close to hiring a writer. This marks the first time that the director and star have teamed since Three Kings. Cube Vision is also producing the NWA biopic, Straight Outta Compton to be scripted by Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center).
