Tobey Magurie locked in for Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI

Tobey Maguire is set to star in the Fox 2000 adaptation of Yann Martel's bestselling novel Life of Pi. This marks the third time that Maquire will work with director Ang Lee, he previously starred in The Ice Storm and Ride With the Devil.

The title role will be played by newcomer Suraj Sharma, as "a boy who is cast adrift in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger after it kills three other animals." The cast also inlucdes, Gerard Depardieu, Adil Hussain and Bollywood actress Tabu, who will play Pi's mother. Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire) will play the adult Pi, while Maguire will play a writer who interviews him about his life-changing experience.

Lee is shooting the film in 3D from a script adapted by David Magee. Life of Pi will be produced by Gil Netter and David Womark and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 14, 2012. Here is what Lee had to say about the casting:

"I am delighted that Tobey has joined the film. He is one of my favorite actors that I have had the pleasure of working with and I am so excited that we get to work together for the third time."

Maguire will be seen next in a dark comedy opposite Elizabeth Banks in Jacob Aaron Estes' The Details, which The Weinstein Co. picked up at Sundance and will release later this year. He is also set to star in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby this summer with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. His Maguire Entertainment banner is producing the New Line musical Rock of Ages.
