DreamWorks drops Antoine Fuqua's SOUTHPAW starring Eminem

DreamWorks has decided to drop Southpaw, the boxing drama that was to be Eminem's return to the screen for the first time since 8 Mile. Deadline reports that the Antoine Fuqua directed film was to begin filming in January based on a script by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter.

The filmmakers are planning to battle on, and will begin seeking other studios for the project. DreamWorks' Stacey Snider gave the project back to the filmmakers because the studio was worried that the market was crowded with "brawler films" like The Fighter and the upcoming Gavin O'Connor-directed mixed martial arts drama Warrior. There is also speculation that DreamWorks may be cautious since Cowboys & Aliens didn't perform as well as expected.

This happens a lot in Hollywood so all is not lost. The project is arleady packed with a director and star that has brand recognition. The story focuses on "a fast-rising welterweight boxer (Eminem) who brawls his way to the title, only to see his world crash down around him due to a tragedy. The drama is about his fight to reclaim past glory for himself and his young daughter."

I am not a fan of Eminem as an actor or rapper so I am not personally heartbroken of this news. What are your thoughts?
