Robert Downey Jr. Talks about IRON MAN 3 and Shane Black

Robert Downey Jr. is pretty much done with his part in The Avengers, from there he will move on to Iron Man 3, which many of us fans are looking forward to. I am sad to see Jon Favreau go, but at the same time I'm excited to see what director Shane Black will end up doing with it. Iron Man 3 is still very early in development, but in a recent interview Downey Jr. talks about what he hopes to see in it, as well as what Back may or may not bring to the movie...

My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end. You can pick several different points of departure for that.

I would love it if they didn't end up holding back like they did in Iron Man 2, they should have taken it all the way with that film, it would have flowed better. Even though I enjoyed Iron Man 2, it didn't get as much love from the critics as the first film, Downy told LA Times that "watching the sequel now, he sees a film in which a lot of things worked but plenty of other things didn’t." You can't really argue with that statement. Iron Man 3 will be written and directed by Black , who wrote a good amount of great action films such as action films such as the Lethal Weapon movies and his 2005 directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which also starred Downey jr. The actor teased saying, "the meta-charms of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang won’t be revisited by the Marvel superhero film — unless of course they are." He adds the following,

The thing about Shane is that it will be anything but one of those moments. Unless we come up with something that is so cheeky and character-driven and perfect that it has to be in the movie.

He’s more than the sum of his parts and he’s also kind of been a sleeper for a long time. We’re not talking much about [the script] right now because Shane is off writing and we talked before that and when we are talking again the talking is going to be over pretty quick [because we're on the same page]. It’s kind of like we’re fighting on the same side and at the same time we’re circling each other, so it’s all great. It should be great.

Bringing in Shane Black to write and direct ‘Iron Man 3′ to me is basically the only transition from Favreau to a ‘next thing’ that Favreau and the audience and Marvel and I could ever actually sign off on. The fun thing is going to be getting Happy in the movie.

I'm excited for Iron Man 3, I'm excited to see what Black will end up bringing to the table. It will be interesting to see where they will take the characters and story this time around, like Downey Jr. said I hope they "leave it all on the field." This is all stuff we have to look forward to seeing. What are your thought's on what Downey Jr. had to say about the movie in this interview?
