Johnny Depp Explains his Tonto Look in THE LONE RANGER

A lot of people have been trying to wrap their brains around the look of Johnny Depp's version of Tonto in Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger. Especially that big ol' bird sitting on the top of his head. Personally I expected nothing less than from the actor who always goes a bit overboard on his movie looks. In a recent interview Depp discusses his look, which includes an explanation of the bird on his head.

[I] looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That’s it. The stripes down the face and across the eyes … There’s this very wise quarter, a very tortured and hurt section, an angry and rageful section, and a very understanding and unique side. I saw these parts, almost like dissecting a brain, these slivers of the individual.

He then went on to talk about the bird on his head,

I thought: Tonto’s got a bird on his head. It’s his spirit guide in a way. It’s dead to others, but it’s not dead to him. It’s very much alive.

Depp explains why he wanted to play Tonto and explains why it's so different than what fans of the original series know.

The whole reason I wanted to play Tonto is to try to [mess] around with the stereotype of the American Indian that has been laid out through history... especially Tonto as the sidekick, The Lone Ranger’s assistant. As you’ll see, it’s most definitely not that.

No matter what role Depp takes on, he always manages to entertain audiences, and he better do it with this movie because the success of The Lone Ranger pretty much rests on his shoulders. The movie comes out on May 31st, 2013, and it also stars Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.

Do you think Depp has the power to make this the highest grossing western of all time?
