M. Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH - Detailed Plot Summary

It's hard to think that M. Night Shyamalan will ever make a good movie again. He's managed to make one terrible film after another, and I'm surprised studios are still giving him money to make movies at this point. He's currently working on his latest project, which is a sci-fi film that stars Will Smith, his son Jaden Smith, and Zoe Kravitz.

Up until this point all we've known about the story is that it centers on a father and son as they crash land on an abandoned Earth a thousand years in the future.  Jaden's character must fight to survive and save both himself and his injured dad. Today we have a more detailed plot synopsis that offers up more information of the story,

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

I have absolutely no faith in Shyamalan's filmmaking skills at this point. Smith is a big box office draw and if this movie makes any money it will most likely be because he stars in it. If the movie ends up being as bad as Shyamalan's previous films, this could end up being Smith's lowest grossing movie ever. It doesn't help that he's not the main character either.

There will be a panel held for After Earth at Comic-Con this year on Saturday July 14th. It will include the film’s screenwriter Gary Whitta and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, as well as the team behind the tie-in comic book After Earth: Innocence

After Earth is set to hit theaters June 7th, 2013. Do you think Shyamalan is still a good filmmaker? Do you think he can actually make a decent movie anymore? Are you even interested in seeing any more of his films?
