Disney's Live-Action CINDERELLA Film Loses Its Director

Director Mark Romanek has left the live-action film production of Cinderella that he was developing with Disney. Basically he and Disney couldn't come to an agreement on how the story should be told. According to Deadline Romanek's vision was just too dark for Disney.

Cate Blanchett is attached to star in the film as the evil stepmother, and the studio started testing young actresses for the title role late last year, one of those actresses includes Saoirse Ronan. Now the studio will start looking for another director. Romanek's previous films include Never Let Me Go and One Hour Photo, and this wouldn't be the first time he's dropped out of a film project. He was also supposed to direct The Wolfman, but again the studio didn't like his darker vision for that either, but how could The Wolfman not be dark?! Romanek is obviously a very dark guy.

The story of Cinderella itself is dark, especially with that evil ass stepmother and those step sisters, but I guess Romanek wanted to make it darker than it needed to be. Disney has a certain image to uphold with it's fairytale properties, so I can see why they would pass on it if it didn't fit their style. 

I imagine they want the same style and feel that we've seen in Alice in Wonderland and OZ the Great and Powerful. Who would you like to see direct the film?
