Plot Details Revealed for INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequels
It's no secret that director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin have been developing a couple of sequels for Independence Day called ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two. It's hard to believe that it's been 17 years since the first movie came out. It's still a fun movie to watch! The team has been hard at work on developing the story and scripts for the sequels, and in a recent interview with EW Emmerich offers up some plot details on where they plan on taking the story, and the characters who will be involved.
The story takes place 20 years after the events that took place in the original movie,
The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back, and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years. It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane.
As for who will end up being in the movie, Bill Pullman already confirmed his involvement, but the jury is still out on Will Smith. It's explained that the storylines will focus on a new generation of human heroes, which will include the stepson of Smith’s Independence Day character. Emmerich explains that "it’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over."
The director then goes on to say the first sequel will have a cliffhanger ending to make sure the audiences come back to see the third one.
The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].
It will be interesting to see how the world has rebuilt itself after 20 years. That will be an interesting vision, and I'm sure it will be fun to watch the aliens blow up all of the new national monuments and cities. I'm looking forward to seeing how these sequels turn out. It's really sounding like these movies are actually going to get made.
