Even though James Cameron is going to be making Avatar films for the rest of his life, he still plans on developing and producing a big screen adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel. Cameron has been working on getting this popular manga to the big screen for years, and he finally decided to pass the directing duties off on someone else. That someone is Robert Rodriguez, and 20th Century Fox is looking to finally get this film into production.

According to THR, three actresses are at the top of the list for the lead role in the film. Those actresses include Maika Monroe (It Follows, Independence Day: Resurgence), Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, CHiPs), and Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming). The actress I’m most familiar with is Monroe, who did a fantastic job in the horror movie It Follows, but according to sources, Zendaya is the frontrunner for the role.

Battle Angel is set the 26th century, and it tells the story of Alita, "an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the film will explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love."

Apparently, this is a star-making vehicle for whomever is cast, and it’s been likened to Cameron’s Dark Angel and how it became the platform that launched Jessica Alba’s career.

It has been a long time since Rodriguez has made a good movie that I enjoyed, but I think he’ll be able to pull off something awesome with this movie, especially with the help and guidance of Cameron. At this point, it’s all about who is going to headline the film and bring the character of Alita to life. Out of these three choices, who would you want to see take it on?
