Bryan Singer Set to Shoot 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA This Fall for Fox

Last year, director Bryan Singer announced that he would be directing a big screen adaptation of Jules Verne's 1868 novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This is been a dream project of his, and now he's set to shoot the film this fall. He previously said:

"It's my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. A story I've wanted to retell since childhood. I promise this will be an epic and emotional adventure for all ages! An adventure very dear to my heart."

I really hope that Singer does bring us something epic. It's exciting that he's going to be able to do this, but I would have much rather seen David Fincher's version. Whenever Singer steps away from the X-Men franchise to do something else, you never know if those films are going to be good or not. Superman Returns and Jack the Giant Killer were both big disappointments. I would love to see Singer make an awesome 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea film, though, and maybe he'll pull if off.

Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has picked up the project and that the studio will start the casting process. The report also says that this is a chance for Singer to “launch another franchise at Fox,” so it sounds like the director and the studio plan on making multiple films. Singer had this to say in a recent statement:

"I’m incredibly excited to be working with my friends at Fox, with whom I’ve had such a long and fruitful relationship. Ever since I was a boy and first discovered the 1870 Jules Verne novel, I have dreamt of retelling this classic story. Without revealing too much, it contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and Sci Fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages."

The original story followed the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo and the crew on his submarine vessel, the Nautilus. I'm curious to find out what exactly Singer is adding to the film, and how they will play into the classic story. The new plot twists should prove to be interesting as well. Hopefully, these changes don't ruin an already perfectly good story.

Singer helped develop the new story, but the script was written by Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney. Are you looking forward to seeing Singer's vision of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?
