Disney is Now Developing a Live Action Remake of THE SWORD IN THE STONE

From 1950 to 1961, Walt Disney Animation went on an insanely impressive run with their feature films, releasing Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, and 101 Dalmatians back to back. They followed that with The Sword in the Stone, a movie I like but one that doesn't carry nearly the same cultural cache as those previously-mentioned films. But that's not stopping Disney from developing a live action remake. THR has the news, and one of the only interesting elements to this story is that Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman is set to write the screenplay.

For those of you who don't know, the film tells the story of a wizard named Merlin who trains a young boy named Arthur to become the king of Camelot. This is the latest in a long list of Disney's animated properties to get the remake treatment, and they're digging so deep that I wouldn't be surprised if they trotted out their famous flop The Black Cauldron as one of the next properties to be remade in live action if only so they can shake off some of the sting that project left back in the mid-80s.

Cogman also has a Magic: The Gathering movie in the works, so we'll have to see which of these projects gains the most steam first. Are you interested in seeing a live action version of The Sword in the Stone? Guy Ritchie is already working on a King Arthur film series, so we may be about to hit peak Arthur in the blockbuster realm.
