The eighth season of Doctor Who is shaping up nicely so far, with a new Doctor, conflict brewing between the Doctor and Clara, a mysterious new villain probably, and a philosophical question at the heart of it all: Is the Doctor a good man? Last week’s episode raised new questions on that front with (SPOILER) the Doctor forging a mind connection with a dalek and showing him beauty and brilliance and hatred, which is a nice through-line from season one’s “Dalek,” in which we first learned about the Doctor’s atrocity in the Time Wars.
One other great thing about “Into the Dalek,” was the Doctor’s constant insistence that Clara is unattractive, through exchanges like this one:
“You were smiling at nothing. I’d almost say you were in love, but to be honest...”
“...you’re not a young woman anymore.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Well, you don’t look it.”
“I do look it!”
“That’s right, keep your spirits up!”
Next week, in "Robot of Sherwood," Clara and the Doctor are going to encounter Robin Hood, whom the Doctor is convinced cannot be real, although Clara seems to be a big fan. New Who has done these historical episodes pretty well (see "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "The Shakespeare Code"), so I’m excited to see what happens back in the early 13th century. I’m also curious to see what is developing on the Danny Pink front. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think.
