Fascinating Video Essay About Chairs in Film

Videos Props by Ben Pearson

You might be thinking, "How the heck can a video essay about chairs possibly be fascinating?" I thought the same thing, but Tony Zhou proves that it can be done with his new video, "In Praise of Chairs."

Unless production design is super elaborate, flashy, or visually interesting in its own right, I'll admit to not paying much attention to it as an audience member. It's one of those elements of filmmaking that contributes in huge ways to a movie's world-building, but it's often overlooked, even though it's most likely registering with us on a subconscious level. Zhou looks specifically at chairs in this video, but it's a good reminder to pay more attention to the production design next time I'm watching a movie and to see how they enhance the characters that interact with them. Hopefully you'll find it as interesting as I did.
