FOR THE KING Preview - New Project Coming To Kickstarter

For The King, a new RPG being Kickstarted by the team at Iron Oak Games, is shaping up to be something really special. Turn-based mechanics are wrapped up in this enchanting pixel meets claymation art style. Though its foundations are turn-based, the developers have made mention of multiple stances for each class, as well as various ability and combo enhancements tied to your character's proficiency with their weapon of choice. This is a cooperative game, so picking a class and weapon that integrates with your partner will be crucial. Along the way you will also encounter sanctums of the gods. Here you may devote your service to any number of gods, therefore receiving their blessings. These can benefit the warrior with special abilities and extra bonuses, such as the god Mir’jaya. If you devote yourself to this god, you will receive a bonus to base defense, which means you will absorb more of the enemy’s attack.

Stat bonuses are great, but what sets this one apart is the lovingly crafted lore they have made to go with each feature and their world as a whole. Let us take the above mentioned bonus. Here is how they describe it (you can read it in full here).

Mir’jaya strengthens the skin of her paragon like that of a wild animal which grants a bonus to their base defense, meaning extra physical damage per enemy attack will be absorbed.

That little piece of descriptive text accompanies so much of the game, even in this early form. If you head to their website, they have released a series of short stories designed to bring you into the world of Fahrul just that much more. The tale of the Farmer, for instance, paints a vivid picture of what is at stake, and with so much effort being put into the narrative at this stage, it bodes well for narrative in the finished product. If they can deliver rich and addictive turn-based gameplay to go along with all that wonderful lore, well, then the sky’s the limit.
