Growing Up Geek - The Oblivion Man

There's kind of a dark and twisted side to me. I'm not evil or anything! At least, I don't think I am. I just seem to enjoy crazy scary horror films and play insane video games like Silent Hill. I think it's fun to be engulfed in these dark worlds. That may sound kind of weird, but that's just how I am.

There are events that have happened to me in my life that I know shaped this dark side of me. Like my parents putting a terrifying mask in front of their bedroom door to keep me out in the middle of the night. You can read all about that here.

One of the big things that I can't help but attribute this to is the introduction of a dark entity in my dreams that would later be called The Oblivion Man. One of the most vivid memories I have from when I was three or four years old is a dream I had that completely engulfed me with terror.

In the dream I found myself in what looked like a post-apocalyptic wasteland in an old western-style ghost town. The whole thing was in sepia tones. All I wanted was my mom and dad, and in my dream I was screaming and crying for them. I was running through the town looking for them but there was no one there — at least, no one human.

As I was panicking and looking for my parents I walked into a old Victorian-style hotel. As soon as I entered it, my dream went from sepia tone to color and the interior of the Hotel was blood red, black, and white. Almost as soon as I walked through the door a dark black figure appeared in the middle of the lobby area and just stared at me. I stared back and was completely overwhelmed with fear and terror unlike anything I had ever felt before. I was so scared that when I tried to scream nothing would come out. It was almost like I was choking when I tried to scream and tears were streaming down my face.

I was finally able to let out a scream, and when I did, I instantly woke up in my bedroom crying. I shit you not… the moment I woke up I looked at my doorway, and standing there in it was the same dark figure who was my dream. I couldn't believe it, and the only thing I could think to do was pull my covers over my head and pray for it to go away. This thing is seared into my memory.

What's interesting about this is that throughout the rest of my life I have had reccurring dreams where this dark evil entity continues to visit me, and it still scares the hell out of me! What's even more interesting is that my brothers have seen the same entity in their dreams, and one of my younger brothers came up with a name for it: The Oblivion Man.

Dreams are freakin' crazy, and it amazes me that after all these years this thing is still lurking in them.
