Guillermo del Toro to Direct Black & White Film Before PACIFIC RIM 2

In a recent interview with Collider, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he would be directing a small, untitled black and white film before he takes on Pacific Rim 2. He's looking to shoot the movie in February or March, and he wants legendary actor John Hurt to play a significant part in the story. He also said that there will be "one great creature" in the story. When asked about the film the director said:

"Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017."

He doesn't give many details on the story, but in this next part of the interview he talks about wanting to work with Hurt, whom he previously directed in both Hellboy movies, and the other casting saying:

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

This sounds like a very promising movie. I've been saying for years that I would love to see Del Toro go back to his roots and make a small film. I'm really happy and excited that he's going to do this. I believe it's these kinds of films that help directors find their mojo again, and help them tell better stories and develop better characters.
